How a Professional Photographer Keeps Kids Engaged During a Photoshoot

When it comes to family photography, capturing genuine smiles and heartwarming moments from children can be a delightful challenge. As a professional photographer who specializes in family portraits, I've learned that keeping kids engaged during a photoshoot is not only possible but can lead to some of the most precious candid shots. In this blog post, I'll share my tried-and-true strategies for ensuring your children have a fun time in front of my camera.

Connection Before the Session

One of my primary focusses at the beginning of any photoshoot with kids is to build my rapport with them before I even pick up the camera. Taking the time to get to know them and letting them get comfortable with me around. Sometimes it can take 5 minutes and other times 20 minutes, I never rush a child and work with what feels best for them. Sometimes I start with a light conversation, asking them about their interests, and maybe even play a simple game to sync our energies. Helping establish trust leads to great moments to be captured later on. When a child is at ease they become more authentic!

Interactive Activities

Incorporating interactive activities into a photoshoot is a game-changer, younger kids are simply great at play and I use that to my advantage! Sometimes I ask parents to bring along props, like bubbles, balloons, or a favourite toy, and I use them to create playful moments. Results always yield genuine smiles and make for beautiful photos.

Letting Them Be Themselves

Sometimes, the best photos come from letting kids be themselves. Instead of constantly directing I focus on capturing the moments when they are naturally expressing themselves. Whether it's a giggle, a curious look, or a shy smile, these candid moments are the most enduring to look back on.

Offering Positive Reinforcement

Praise and encouragement can work wonders. Whenever a child cooperates or strikes a pose I love, I immediately offer them a genuine compliment. Positive reinforcement in general is known to boost confidence, as a result their enthusiasm continues beautifully throughout the session.

Patience and Flexibility

Children can sometimes be unpredictable, and that's okay! My goal is always to be patient and go with the flow. If they need a break or a moment to run around and release some energy, I always follow their lead. Flexibility is essential in ensuring a stress-free photoshoot for both the children and their parents.

Engaging Their Imagination

Children have vivid imaginations, so why not tap into their creativity! I love to ask them  to pretend they are characters from their favourite story or to imagine they are exploring a magical forest. Encouraging them to play out these scenarios, I love to capture their genuine reactions and gift these wonderful moments to their family.

Using Music and Props

Music is known to set the mood and help create a relaxed atmosphere. With younger children, playing some of their favourite tunes always helps get them in a good mood and they even forget we are even taking photos. Additionally, props like colourful umbrellas, hats, or costumes can add an element of fun and playfulness to a photoshoot.

Involving Parents or Siblings

Sometimes, having a familiar face nearby can help children feel more at ease. I love to encourage parents or siblings to join in on the fun, whether it's holding hands, playing peek-a-boo, or sharing a laugh. These interactions can lead to heartwarming family moments.

Staying Behind the Scenes

As a photographer, I often find that the best shots of kids come when I'm not the centre of attention. I tend to use a long lens and capture unscripted candid moments from a distance, allowing children to forget about the camera and be themselves.

Keeping It Short and Sweet

Children have shorter attention spans, so it's essential for me to keep a photoshoot relatively short and focused. I plan all my shots in advance and aim to capture the most important moments efficiently.

Capturing the beauty and authenticity of children during a photoshoot is a delightful art and I take great pride in working with children to preserve their childhood glow. In my countless years of experience I’ve learned that patience, creativity, and a little bit of playfulness, can turn any photoshoot with kids into a wonderful and memorable experience for everyone involved.

A Photographer's Guide to Preparing for a Picture-Perfect Session

As a photographer, I have had the privilege of witnessing countless heartwarming family moments through my lens. There's something truly magical about capturing the love, laughter, and connection that families share. To help you make the most of your upcoming family photoshoot, here are insider tips on preparing for a picture-perfect session from a photographer's perspective.

Communication is Key

From the moment we start planning your family photoshoot, open and clear communication is crucial. Share your vision, expectations, and any specific ideas you have in mind. The better I understand your family dynamics and preferences, the better I can tailor the session to your unique story.

Embrace Authenticity

While planning poses and group shots can be important, some of the most precious moments are the spontaneous ones. Don't be afraid to let your personalities shine through during your photoshoot. Whether it's a shared inside joke, a comforting embrace, or a burst of laughter, these candid moments often make for the most memorable photos.

Location Matters

Selecting the right location is significant! Think about the places that hold meaning for your family. It could be your favourite park, a beach, or even your own backyard. Consider the time of day as well; the soft and warm light during "golden hour" can work wonders for your photos.

Wardrobe Choices Matter

I often get asked about clothing choices, and my advice is simple: coordinate, but don't match. Choose a colour palette that complements the location and your family's personality. Solid colours, subtle patterns, and layers can add depth to your images. Most importantly, wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Trust the Process

It's completely normal to feel a bit nervous before your photoshoot, especially if it's your first time working with a professional photographer. But remember, you've hired a professional for that very reason! Trust my experience and creativity to guide you through the process. I'll suggest angles, and ideas that will bring out the best in your family.

Plan Ahead, but Be Flexible

Planning is essential, but so is flexibility. Sometimes the unexpected happens during a session—a child's impromptu dance, a puppy's playful antics, or a sudden burst of rain. Embrace these moments as part of your family's story; they often lead to unique photos!

Bring Personal Touches

Personal items and props can add depth and meaning to your photos. Consider bringing along items that hold sentimental value—perhaps a family quilt, a cherished book, or a vintage camera. These elements can help tell your family's story and make your photos even more special.

Relax and Enjoy the Experience

Remember that a family photoshoot is not just about the end result; it's about the experience itself. Take this opportunity to bond with your loved ones, create lasting memories, and have fun together. The more relaxed and authentic you are, the more beautiful and meaningful your photos will be.

I feel truly honoured to be part of your family's journey through photography. I'm here to capture the moments that matter most to you, so let's work together to create images that tell your unique story. By communicating openly, embracing authenticity, and trusting the process, we'll ensure that your family photoshoot is an enjoyable and unforgettable experience.

The Art of Candid Photography: Telling Your Family's Story

In the world of photography, there's a beauty in the unscripted, the spontaneous, and the unplanned moments. Candid photography, a genre that captures genuine emotions and connections, has the remarkable ability to tell your family's story in a way that posed pictures simply cannot. While posed photos certainly have their place in family albums, it's the candid shots that often hold the most cherished memories. In this article, I'll share my personal view on the importance of candid photography and how it captures the essence of family life

The Power of Authenticity

Candid photography is all about capturing moments as they happen, unfiltered and unposed. These unguarded moments are a reflection of your family's true selves, showcasing their authentic personalities and emotions. When you look back at candid photos, you're transported to that precise moment in time, with all the genuine laughter, joy, surprise, and even the occasional tears.

Posed pictures, while undoubtedly beautiful, can sometimes come across as forced or staged. Candid shots, on the other hand, reveal the real interactions and dynamics within your family. The way your child's eyes light up when they see their favorite toy, the comforting embrace between siblings during a challenging time, or the laughter shared during an impromptu tickle fight—these are the moments that make your family unique, and candid photography captures them beautifully.

Embracing Imperfections

One of the most appealing aspects of candid photography is its willingness to embrace imperfections. Life isn't always picture-perfect, and neither are your family moments. Candid photos often feature messy hair, untucked shirts, and genuine expressions that may not always conform to conventional standards of beauty. Yet, it's these imperfections that make these photos so endearing.

When we see candid shots, we're reminded that life is messy, unpredictable, and full of surprises. We remember that it's okay to be imperfect and that genuine love and connection exist beyond the constraints of perfection. Celebrate these imperfections, showing that they are an essential part of your family's story.

Preserving Memories

One of the primary purposes of photography is to preserve memories, and candid photography excels in this regard. These moments often hold more sentimental value than perfectly composed photos because they encapsulate the essence of the moment. Whether it's a stolen kiss between parents, a child's gleeful expression as they blow out their birthday candles, or a shared secret smile between grandparents, these are the memories that you want to cherish forever.

As time passes, these candid shots become invaluable. They not only remind us of the joyous times but also serve as a testament to the growth as a family. Looking back at candid photos can evoke a sense of nostalgia, helping us remember the little details that we might have otherwise forgotten.

A Personal Touch

Candid photography adds a personal touch to your family's story. These photos are unique to your family's experiences, and they can't be replicated. They reflect your family's personality, the bonds you share, and the moments that define you. When you share these photos with loved ones or future generations, you're sharing a piece of your family's history.

In a world where we often curate our lives for public consumption on social media, candid photography allows you to showcase the raw, unfiltered moments that truly matter. It's a way of saying, "This is who we are, unapologetically."

Therefore, candid photography is all about the art of capturing life's most precious moments authentically. It tells your family's story in a way that posed pictures cannot, celebrating authenticity, imperfections, and the beauty of genuine connections.
